On Friday, April 10, Europe’s new biometric border control system went live across all 29 Schengen countries.

Non-EU travelers entering any of the Schengen countries for stays up to 90 days within a 180 day period must register biometric data such as facial images, finger prints along with their passport information when they arrive. Passport stamping will be a thing of the past.

Initial reports say that the rollout has been a mess with hours long lines at passport control stations at major airports and travelers missing their connections.

Meanwhile, the airline associations are lobbying the Schengen government to delay the program until after the summer rush.
