· The untamed beauty of the Royal Gorge aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railway;

· The magnificent mesas and canyons of San Juan National Forest aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad;

· The rugged splendor of the Rockies aboard the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad.

We’ll also pick up steam with visits to Colorado Spring’s Garden of the Gods, Mesa Verde’s ancient cliff dwellings, Chimayo’s famous pilgrimage site, and Glenwood Spring’s historic Hotel Colorado, a favorite of President Theodore Roosevelt’s.

Train buffs will also enjoy time in Durango’s D&SNG Railway Museum.

All aboard! For one week in October, chasing rainbows is easy as hundreds of hot-air balloons take flight and turn the already stunning atmosphere of New Mexico into a kaleidoscope of dizzying color.

Daily itinerary

October 2: Arrive in Denver to join the group. A free day to explore the city

October 3: Ride the Spectacular Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Later head to Colorado Springs to see the Garden of the Gods

October 4: Travel to Albuquerque with a free evening to explore the city.

October 5: Time for the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta experience from the pre-dawn “Dawn Patrol” Opening Ceremonies and the morning Mass Ascension of hundreds of balloons. After a day touring the city we return to the balloon grounds for the evening festivities and launches.

October 6: Spend the day in beautiful Santa Fe with its abundance of art galleries finished with a group dinner at local restaurant.

October 7: Visit the Museum of International Folk Art followed by an excursion to nearby Chimayo, lunch at Rancho de Chimayo and visit Santuario De Chimayo, known for its healing powers.

October 8: An exciting day as we explore the Anasazi Puebloan cliff dwellings at the Bandelier National Monument and museum then head on to Taos. We’ll finish our day in Durango, Colorado.

October 9: This morning we explore the Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in Durango we’ll have ample time at the Durango & Silverton Railway Museum with its artifacts and extensive model train layout.

October 10: All aboard the legendary steam-powered Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a scenic ride through the Rio de las Animas Canyon and the San Juan National Forest. We end our day in the mountain retreat of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

October 11: Today we travel through the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains to historic Georgetown where we board the dramatic steam-powered Georgetown Loop Railroad. The views of golden aspen trees, pines and firs with views of Clear Creek Canyon will be stunning. We finish our day back in Denver with a group farewell dinner.

October 12: Our tour is done. Thank you for sharing this remarkable week-plus with us. If you wish we can arrange extensions such as to Las Vegas and more western national parks such as the Grand Canyon and Arches NP.
